FTEF-Funded Drones Make Landing at Fort Thomas Schools
From military maneuvers to sweeping panoramic views of the Super Bowl, drones have cemented a place in the American zeitgeist. The flying machines, employed for a growing list of uses from recreational to functional, are certainly where the future is headed. And they’re stopping along the way at Fort Thomas schools.
When technology teacher Ron Rosel began to see the writing on the wall in terms of drones growing in use through different fields, he decided it might be pertinent to involve them in the curriculum of his students. “The engineering department wanted to provide the opportunity for students to learn about aerospace and drones,” says Rosel “These drones are being used in the military, police departments and the business world – and we wanted to give our students the skills to be able to program and fly these drones.”
With the implementation of drones dotting the landscape of technology more by the day, Rosel saw a unique opportunity to work them into his own classroom and applied for a $2,500 grant from the Fort Thomas Education Foundation. His request was approved and, after selecting the model of drone he wished to use with his students, added them as a component of his lesson plans.
Not only have the students taken to the technology quickly, Highlands will even field a drone team at the upcoming TSA (Technology Students Association) statewide event in Louisville later this month.
As the engineering department grows in scope, Rosel hopes to bring more unique learning opportunities to his classes. “Next we will be looking at more technology needs and updates,” says Rosel. “We will need to add more new equipment for the engineering program. The scope has grown and we need addition tools like 3D printers, laser engravers and more drones. We currently are accessing our needs and will be sharing this with the district.”
Rosel, who has worked with the Education Foundation in the past, feels that having an organization like FTEF in his camp helps to bring great options and experiences to his students. “Having the resources to partner with the Foundation is an incredible opportunity,” says Rosel. “This gives Fort Thomas School District and all its students the opportunity to reach out for additional resources, support local education and prepare the high school students for post-secondary and career education opportunities.
